Understanding the Levels of Care Continuum

Inpatient/ Hospitalization

  • This is the highest level of care an individual can receive
  • Inpatient care takes place in a hospital setting where individuals stay overnight (typically for several days)
  • When is Inpatient Care Appropriate?

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

  • A structured, full day treatment program (usually 5-6 hours a day, 5 days a week) where students go home at night.
  • When is PHP an Appropriate Level of Care?
    • When someone needs more support than weekly therapy
    • When symptoms are significantly impacting daily functioning
    • As a step down from inpatient care
  • What are Partial Hospitalization Programs?
    • Daily therapy (typically group 3-5 hours a day, individual counseling at least 1 hour a week, and sometimes includes family counseling)
    • Skill-building focused (coping skills, emotional regulation strategies)
    • Psychiatric support if needed

  • When is IOP an Appropriate Level of Care?
    • When someone needs consistent support but can still manage some daily responsibilities
    • As a step down from PHP or inpatient care
    • When outpatient therapy alone isn't effective
  • What are Intensive Outpatient Programs?
    • Group therapy focused  (2-3 hours of group a day, individual counseling at least 1 hour a week, and sometimes includes family counseling)
    • Continued development of coping skill and emotional regulation strategies
    • Focused on providing support while increasing independence
