Counseling Options for Students

High school can be stressful, overwhelming, and sometimes just a lot to handle. Individual counseling services are available to support students navigating academic, social, emotional, or substance-related concerns. The Student Assistance Counselor, Mental Health Clinician, and School Counselors provide confidential, supportive spaces where students can explore challenges, build coping skills, and strengthen decision-making. Using a person-centered approach along with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) techniques, counseling focuses on developing healthy thinking patterns, emotional regulation skills, and practical strategies for managing stress. Services are evidence-based and solution-focused approaches designed to meet the unique needs of students in our school community and to promote resilience, wellness, and academic success.

School supportive counseling is not therapy and is not a substitute for outside mental health support.  If your student requires additional support outside of school, please reach out and the SAC can provide recommendations for local providers based on your insurance needs.

All counselors at South Hunterdon Regional High School collaborate with students outside providers when given consent to do so and as appropriate.

Group counseling gives students a supportive space to connect with others who may be going through similar experiences. Led by the Student Assistance Counselor and Mental Health Clinician, groups focus on building coping skills, managing stress and emotions, improving communication, and strengthening decision-making. Using person-centered, CBT, and DBT strategies, students learn practical tools they can use in school and everyday life while also gaining support from peers. Groups are confidential, respectful, and designed to help students feel understood, supported, and less alone.

Group topics include:

  • Social Skills
  • Anxiety
  • Stress Management
  • Specific Student Experiences (ex. gender, sexuality)
  • Drug and Alcohol Use
  • Family Drug and Alcohol Use
