February Chat & Crew
Students gathered in the library for "Chat & Chew," a monthly program offered during Flex in partnership with the Hunterdon County Library. HCL Teen Librarian Sarah Pike visited with a quick craft, snacks, and news of HCL happenings, including the upcoming Teen Lock-in and Teen Dungeons & Dragon night at the newly renovated South Branch in Ringoes.
"Chat & Chew" is a popular opportunity for students to relax, unwind, and connect. Library Squad members volunteer to assist Sarah. February's craft was a Danish woven heart.

Girls Wrestilng
Congratulations to all winter sports teams, including the wrestling team which went 10-13. Tyler Brusca, Lilliana Ferreira, Stephanie Marquez and Madisyn Whyte are the four girls who wrestled for South Hunterdon this season. We caught up with Liliiana and Madisyn to learn more about their experience this year.
Q: What do you like most about being part of the wrestling team?
LF: What I like most about being part of the wrestling team is how close everyone becomes. Even though wrestling is an individual sport, you’re never alone. My teammates pushed me every day, and we all understand how hard the practices are. There’s something really special about working through tough workouts together and knowing everyone is trying their best. Even though we were always in our (the girls team) little corner giggling and having a grand old time every day, we have learned and grown a lot throughout this season and I am excited to see what next year has in store for us.
MW: What I like most about being a part of the wrestling team is the bond with my teammates and pushing myself to get better every day.
Q: What is one skill you’ve improved the most since joining the team?
LF: The skill I’ve improved the most since joining the team is my confidence. When I first started two years ago, I doubted myself a lot. Now, I trust my training and my instincts during matches. I’ve also gotten a lot better at controlling my nerves before I step on the mat. Even if I know I'm going to lose a match I go out there and put my best foot forward to try and win it for my team and for myself.
MW: One skill I’ve improved the most is my strength and endurance because practices are tough and require a lot of effort.
Q: What does wrestling teach you that helps outside of sports?
LF:Wrestling teaches me discipline and mental toughness, which helps me outside of sports. It’s taught me how to stay focused, manage my time, and not give up when something feels hard. Whether it’s schoolwork or personal challenges, I know I can handle more than I think I can. during matches your are being tested physically and mentally, when you set foot on that mat it’s just you and your opponent. There’s no one else who can do the work for you. You have to stay calm and push through the exhaustion and physical strain that you are being put through. In those moments, you learn how strong your mind really is. Wrestling has shown me that even when I feel tired or overwhelmed, I can keep going and finish strong even if that doesn't mean winning.
MW: Wrestling teaches discipline and mental toughness, which helps me stay focused in school and not give up easily.
Q: How do teammates support each other during the season?
LF: Teammates support each other by constantly encouraging one another. During practice, we help each other learn new moves and give advice. During matches, we’re always cheering from the side of the mat and recording their matches like the fangirls that we are. If someone loses, we help them learn from their mistakes instead of putting them down. Before a match all the girls get together and pray the rosary, and we try to hype eachother up to get our nerves out of the way which is always fun. Since we are such a small girls team we have really grown a special bond that you don't really see in any other sport which is one reason I created the team in the first place.
MW: Teammates support each other by encouraging one another at practice, helping each other improve, and cheering during matches.
Q: How has wrestling shaped you as a person? Or, what goals do you have for next season?
LF: Wrestling has shaped me into a more determined person. It’s made me more confident in who I am, especially in a sport where you don't see a lot of women. My goal for next season is to improve my technique, compete in more matches, and recrute a lot more girls for our team!
MW: Wrestling has made me more confident and hardworking. My goal for next season is to improve my technique and win more matches.
