Community Classroom Initiative

On Friday we were fortunate to have Dr. O'Neill who is a parent and community member join our AP PreCalculus students to discuss her career as a Data Scientist and how the math students are learning relates to her career. It was a great presentation and opportunity for students to learn about various careers and how the math they are learning is being used in this field!
This was made possible by our Community Classroom Initiative. Are you interested in presenting to our students, if so please complete this form.

Trip to Monmouth University

On November 18th, a group of our 11th grade students visited Monmouth University for a campus tour. They explored academic buildings, learned about admissions and student life, and had the opportunity to speak with current Monmouth students about their experiences. It was a great day of college exploration and future planning!

The Counseling Department is excited to share our upcoming college visits for this school year. These trips give students the chance to explore campuses, learn about academic programs, and get a first-hand look at college life.

Upcoming Visits:

Muhlenberg College – 12/19
Drexel University – 2/10
Stockton University – 3/19
Permission slips will be sent out via email and ParentSquare as the visit dates get closer so be on the lookout!

Chat & Crew

SHRHS Library is partnering with the Hunterdon County Library to offer "Chat & Chew." This monthly program takes place during Flex. HCL Teen Librarian Sarah Pike visits with a quick craft, snacks, and news of HCL happenings. It is a chance for students to relax, unwind, and connect. Library Squad members are on hand to assist Sarah.

In October, students made a pom-pom monster; the November craft is a beaded keychain or mobile phone charm. SHRHS librarian, Ms. Smyth said, "HCL is so generous to provide this program! The students love Sarah and have been having a great time."

Staff Celebrations

Congratulations to Suzanne Zambella (pictured first/left) for being named the November Staff Member of the Month, and Pam Baker for 20 years of service to South Hunterdon. We appreciate all of our teachers and staff members this time of year, especially these two women for helping to make our school a better place.

We caught up with Pam Baker to learn more about her experience working at South.

Q: What has been the most rewarding aspect of working with South Hunterdon students?
PB: Watching students grow and mature into confident, capable adults. During high school students are discovering who they are, what they care about, and how they want from life. Seeing their progress, both academically and personally is a joyful experience.

Q: What continues to inspire you in the field of education?

PB: The resilience of young people. During the pandemic, students were asked to completely transform the way they learned, and time and again, they rose to the challenge. Even now, I continue to be inspired by the way they adapt, persevere, and push forward. Watching students grow from unsure freshmen into confident, capable seniors is truly remarkable.  Their academic, social, and personal growth amazes and motivates me to keep doing this work.

Q: What is the most important thing you hope students learn from you as they grow?

PB: Be kind, and take time to listen when someone needs to talk.

Q: How have students shaped you into the person you are today?

PB: Students teach us something new every day.  Just this year alone, I have learned a completely new vocabulary!  Not to mention how technology has grown over the past decade.  The student’s grasp of emerging technology keeps me on my toes.  Their perspectives, energy and adaptability push me to continue growing right alongside them.

Q: What makes South Hunterdon a special place to work?

PB:
The feeling of community that we have is unique. Students come back from college, or even if they have moved away from the district, and let us know how much they miss this close community of people.
