All about the Environment

The Watershed Institute

On a beautiful spring day, the Key Club volunteered at The Watershed Institute on Tuesday, April 22nd. The Watershed Institute is dedicated to protecting and restoring water resources and natural habitats across central New Jersey. It manages more than 900 acres of preserved land. Fifteen enthusiastic club members teamed up with Watershed Steward Mr. Eric Dutaud to remove invasive honeysuckle plants from the banks of Wargo Pond. This important work helps promote the growth of native plant species and prepares the area for future ecological restoration efforts, directly supporting the long-term health of the pond ecosystem.

Youth Climate Summit

On Friday, April 24th, some of our Environmental Club members participated in the Youth Climate Summit hosted by the Nature Nurture Center in Easton, PA. We saw various presentations related to climate change including local food industry, fast fashion, plant-based chef demonstration and tasting, civic engagement panel with local leaders including Bethlehem Mayor William Reynolds and State Representative Robert Freeman, and performance from the Mosaic Youth Chorus, who performed environmentally-themed pieces that were synced up to various global climate-related data projected on the sphere.

Shad Fest

Three of our Seniors spent a beautiful, but windy, afternoon volunteering at Shad Fest on Sunday with Mrs. Devlin!  Ty Dunn and Noah Cormier were also representing the Key Club and Tom Donlon was representing the National Honor Society.  They sold t-shirts for the Chamber of Commerce and were extremely helpful!

Grow-a-Row

Students in Mr. Monaco's Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources class welcomed two visitors from America's Grow-a-Row (AGAR) on Wednesday, April 23rd.

In 2002, Mr. Chip Paillex started a 30 by 30 foot garden with his daughter Kyra, who was four-years-old at the time. They donated 120 lbs. of extra produce to the
Flemington Area Food Pantry. Once Mr. Paillex saw the need for fresh fruits and vegetables at local food pantries, he became inspired to grow more produce to feed the hungry. In 2008, he made AGAR his full-time job.

Today, Grow-a-Row is a thriving 501(c)(3) nonprofit with 423 acres over four farm locations that donates farm fresh produce to feeding organizations across the nation.

Mr. Monaco's students learned how Grow-a-Row donates 100% of their produce and has donated over 24 million lbs since its start in 2002. Their
2025 goal is to donate 3.9 million pounds of fresh produce! In their presentation, AGAR representatives shared how they educate people facing food insecurity by teaching them how to eat healthy. AGAR are a Volunteer Destination Center with more than 10,000 volunteers harvesting on the farm each year. In fact, Mr. Monaco's class plans to visit and volunteer with Grow-a-Row this June!
