Celebrating AP Scholars

Every fall, the AP Program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through their performance on multiple AP Exams. AP Scholar Awards come in different levels and types.

Three South Hunterdon students (Lucas Gravier, Iris Li and Dominik Zawadzki) have been distinguished as AP Scholars after receiving scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. One outstanding student (Yesenia Guerra) has earned the AP Scholar with Honor award after receiving an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

Congratulations to all four students on their tremendous academic achievements!

How have your AP classes shaped your educational experience at South?

Yesenia Guerra:
I believe that AP classes at South offer a unique path of study. While both challenging and demanding, I've found that APs offer better preparation for college because of how in-depth the material goes. But with dedicated teachers who seek to assist their students, it's been fairly manageable to complete these courses while simultaneously developing a wide array of knowledge. Overall, I feel that AP classes at South have contributed to my hard-working personality while also driving me to success!

Iris Li:
I feel that AP classes have assisted me in pushing my expectations and helped me develop an understanding of education beyond high school.

Why is it important to feel challenged in the classroom?

Yesenia Guerra: I feel that challenge can foster intellectual curiosity in the minds of students, prompting them to thrive for success while also preparing them for college/university. AP courses offer a glimpse into how thorough and demanding college courses are because of how much material is included in the curriculum. I believe that this ultimately helps students to better prepare for higher education environments.

Iris Li:  It is important to challenge yourself in the classroom not only for academic development but also for personal development. The most challenging aspect of taking AP classes was overcoming negative mentalities and being able to recognize your true capabilities. By taking these classes, I have gained the perspective of not dreading challenges but expecting them.

What are you looking forward to studying or doing after graduation?

Yesenia Guerra: Concerning my educational plans after graduation, I plan to attend college and prepare myself for my end goal of becoming a forensics pathologist! But, my path of study ultimately depends on what colleges I get accepted into. My number one major choice as of right now is forensics science but very few colleges offer amazing forensics programs. So, if I'm accepted into a school that offers a wide range of forensics opportunities, I'm bound to go to that school. However, if this doesn't occur, I'd most likely double major in biochemistry and criminal justice at another college/university.

Iris Li: Through AP classes, I have developed an interest in behavioral economics and mathematics and would like to continue to study economics and/or finance in college.
