The Science Olympiad is a national organization whose goal
is to foster students who are interested in the areas of science and
technology. The group organizes competitive tournaments at the
regional, state, and national level in which students demonstrate their
knowledge and skill in a variety of events representing the different
content areas of science. Example events include: Reptiles &
Amphibians, Fossils, Science Crime Busters, and Robo-Cross.
The club builds off of the Science Olympiad program which
takes place at the elementary school level. South has competed in the
middle school Science Olympiad for the past number years and recently
began a high school team as interest has grown. Students in Grades 7
through 9 can compete in the middle school Science Olympiad while
students in Grade 10 through 12 can compete in the high school
Olympiad.
The middle school team has represented South well in past
tournaments. The team has advanced past the regional level of
competition each year since its inception. Its highest ranking to date
came in 2008 when the team placed
seventh overall in the state of New Jersey.
The Science Olympiad Team meets from mid-October till the
end of the tournament season (usually mid-March) with practices times
varying on the event and the individual.
