Extracurricular Activities

After School Enrichment

Advisors: Joe Vocke and Kaitlyn DeLuca


After School Enrichment meets after school and is open to all middle and high school students in need of additional support completing school work, help studying or just a place to work or read. 


Art Club (HS)

Advisor: Joanna Netta 

Art Club sparks students' creativity by exploring two and three dimensional art in various mediums. Students are exposed to the nuances of each medium and have the opportunity to create and share their own creative designs. The purpose of the art club is to provide students who have an interest in art an opportunity to explore art forms beyond what is offered in the curriculum. It gives students the opportunity to work individually or in groups.


Art Club (MS)

Advisor: Kady Johnson 

The middle school art club explores all types of mediums such as painting, drawing, sculpting, and more. Students will be able to choose their chosen art form and express their creativity. The art club is all about giving students who love art a chance to explore their talents by working individually or in a group setting. 


Athletes for Athletes (HS)

Advisor: Kyle Hart 


Athletes for athletes is a club geared towards supporting all things South Hunterdon, members of this group will help promote SHR activities (sporting events, HS musicals, Dances, talent show, night at the nest and more) Throughout the year members of the club will work with advisors and committees to help establish school spirit and promote students involvement with SHR events and activities.  


Black Student Union

Advisor: Bay Pedersen 

The Black Student Union (BSU) is a dynamic and inclusive student organization dedicated to fostering a sense of unity, empowerment, and cultural appreciation among its members. We are proud to provide a safe and welcoming space for students of African and African-American descent, as well as allies who are interested in learning about and supporting the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the Black community. We are also responsible for designing and planning school-wide educational cultural events throughout the school year.

The Student Council is an opportunity to get involved with your classmates and gain leadership experience. The Student Council will plan events, activities and fundraisers. Officers will be elected in a grade-wide class election. 


Dance Club (MS/HS)

Advisor: Taylor LaBau 


The Dance Club is an opportunity to engage students in different styles of dance, have students learn and work through the process of choreography, and provide students a safe space to create and perform dance as it interests them. Our motto is that "everyone is a dancer" and that dancing is not just learning steps to a routine, but it is how you express yourself through dance and movement. We will meet weekly, collaborate together to create a few dances, explore different genres of dance and have the opportunity to perform.


Drama Club

Advisor: Kaitlyn DeLuca


Fun, casual club open to all high school students interested in any aspect of theater. We often take a trip to a Broadway or other professional show.


Future Farmers of America (FFA) HS/MS

Advisor: Taylor Waldron

The National FFA Organization is one of the country’s largest youth organizations with more than 500,000 members Nationwide. FFA functions as part of a school’s agricultural education program where members prepare for careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture and beyond. The skills acquired through an FFA membership include but are not limited to leadership and teamwork, time management, public speaking, resume writing, job interviewing and industry specific skills in all areas of interest. FFA is not just for farmers anymore. FFA is for leaders and thinkers who want to have a positive impact on their school and community and prepare for successful careers in any industry.


French Honor Society(HS)

Advisor: Walter Burkat 

Admittance into the French Honor Society is awarded to those students in French III or higher with a 90% average by the third marking period of the academic school year. This is a national honor society and will be recognized as such on student transcripts.  The National French Honor Society strives to promote continuity of interest in Francophone studies


Gaming Club

Advisor: Alex Chan 


The South Hunterdon Gaming Club is an after-school organization that provides a safe, welcoming, and relaxed environment in which students can play multiplayer video games with one another. We have access to a number of PC and retro games, but students may bring their own consoles, controllers, and games with parent approval. The club typically meets once per week, from 3-4:30pm.


GSA (Gender Sexuality Alliance)

Advisor: Heather Damron 


A student-run support club for fostering connections, compassion and understanding by and for LGBTQ high school students. We are also responsible for designing and planning school-wide inclusivity events throughout the school year. 


International Thespian Society

Advisor: Kaitlyn DeLuca


A prestigious theatre honor society; high school students must take at least one elective drama class and participate in at least one after school production in addition to logging required thespian points in order to be inducted into the society. Thespians are permitted to march with honors regalia in their graduation ceremony. A $35 fee for lifetime membership is required before induction.


Intramurals Fall/Winter/Spring Road Runners

Advisor: Christine Deiley

The Road Runners is an intramural group that is meant to allow our high school students the opportunity to keep physically active and healthy.  We will run after school during 9 sessions either on the track (if possible) or on the road with a “road partner."  Runners can run at their own pace/speed.  This is meant to be a fun way to promote running as a lifetime activity.

                        

Floor Hockey Club

Advisor: Dan Vorgity 

The Floor Hockey Club is open to all grades and provides an opportunity for South’s students to participate in the sport of hockey in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.  Students are encouraged to bring their own equipment if they have any but the school can provide sticks and/or roller blades if needed.  We meet for 9 sessions in the Middle School Gym after school in the spring. 


Gatorball Club
Advisor: Dan Ruvolo 

Gatorball Club is open to all students in grades 7 and 8 and meets after school from 2:50-3:50, twice per week, from late October through late November.  The club caters to students of all athletic ability and promotes acceptance and teamwork while also providing a venue for competitive play. Students can expect to learn about and participate in variations of Gatorball, such as “Crackabout,” “Four Quadrants,” and “Powerball.” Sign ups are held during the first week in October and will be limited to the first 20 participants. Transportation arrangements must be made by the student.


Jazz Band

Advisor: Gabe Stephens 

The Jazz Band is an extracurricular music ensemble that focuses on the development and performance of Jazz techniques and repertoire. This ensemble is open to High School students who are interested in learning more about Jazz and participating in additional performance opportunities. The Jazz Band meets after school on Wednesday’s from November-May.


Key Club

Advisors: Rachel Devlin and Jennifer Grgurich


Key Club is part of Key Club International and the Kiwanis Club.  Its focus is on service to others in the local community and beyond. Student-elected officers attend virtual regional meetings with neighboring high school clubs and help plan community service activities with advisors. In the past, we have collected donations for food drives, toy drives, and cancer support.  We have volunteered in our district elementary schools for Veterans’ Day, Read Across America Week and Field Day.  We also have participated in field trips to the local American Legion,  partnered with Habitat for Humanity, and served lunch at the Trenton area soup kitchen.    Students have the opportunity to complete volunteer work by  attending monthly meetings, traveling on community service field trips, and participating in other volunteer opportunities.  Key Club is open to all high school students.


LatinX Student Union

Advisor: Daphne Rodriguez 


The LatinX Student Union is a club open to all students dedicated to promoting the educational success, cultural awareness, and empowerment of LatinX students at SHR. Our mission is to create a platform that facilitates dialogue, collaboration, and engagement among LatinX students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. By organizing educational, social, and cultural events, we aim to foster a sense of belonging, pride, and unity among LatinX students as well as educating students and staff about our culture. Ultimately, our mission is to empower LatinX students to excel academically, embrace their cultural heritage, and become agents of positive change in society.


Library Squad (8-12)

Advisor: Maureen Smyth 


The Library Squad is a service club with an aim to support the SHR library, while developing leadership skills. Membership is by invitation and involves a commitment to serve as a library booster and to volunteer in the library regularly. 


Literary Magazine

Advisor: Deborah Lamer


The SHR Literary Magazine seeks to showcase the creativity of our school community.  Works of poetry, music, fiction, essays, memoirs, visual art, photography, comics, and video are all encouraged.  Members of the club work to curate and design a digital magazine that is distributed at the end of the academic year.  


Marching Band

Advisor: Gabe Stephens  

The SHR Marching Eagles is an extracurricular music ensemble that performs both during home and away football games, as well as at local competitions throughout the Fall. The Marching Eagles is open to both Middle and High School students and includes wind instruments, percussion, and color guard. The group meetings for a two week Band Camp in August and regularly for after school rehearsals during the season.


Middle School Student Council

Advisor: Alison Douglas 


The Middle School student council helps share students' ideas, interests, and concerns with teachers and school principals. This group helps to raise funds for school wide activities, including social events, community projects, and helping people in need. All middle school students are encouraged to participate in student council meetings.


National Honor Society

Advisor: Kaitlyn DeLuca 

The National Honor Society is an elite group of student leaders who demonstrate the four pillars necessary for membership: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Students will create and take advantage of opportunities to enrich the school community, local community, and world at large in the aforementioned areas. The extensive and multifaceted admissions process adheres to the requirements outlined in our constitution. A minimum cumulative GPA is also required to be considered for admittance. 


NJ Future Educators

Advisors: Alex Chan 


The Future Educators of South Hunterdon gives our students the opportunity to learn about what being an educator is all about.  It will enlighten our students into the requirements of becoming a teacher and what the day to day life of a teacher is like.  There will be opportunities to shadow teachers in the district so that the students can really see if this is the potential future for themselves. Students will potentially have the opportunity to participate in regional and statewide conferences in partnership with New Jersey Colleges and Universities, participate in statewide service learning projects and teacher appreciation initiatives as well as attend a Future Educators Academy in the summer.


Newsies Journalism Club
Advisors: Kaitlyn DeLuca  and Bay Pedersen 

A club for students interested in submitting writing or photography for the school's student-run newspaper.


Night at the Nest

Advisors: Kyle Hart,  Peggy PhillipsKendall StorcellaFrank Schermerhorn 

Night at the Nest is a two night event for high school students to come together and participate in team events, relays and dances.  Each year teams are presented with a theme that all music, dance and costumes must relate to.  Practices take place in the evening beginning in December in preparation for the two nights of fun in March.


Peer Leaders

Advisor: Tom Bill


Peer Leaders is a student-led opportunity to serve others in our school and community. Selflessness and the willingness to Pay It Forward are the membership qualifications. Do The Next Right Thing! All are welcome.


Pit Orchestra

Advisor: Gabe Stephens


The Pit Orchestra is an extracurricular music ensemble that prepares and performs the music for the Spring Musical. This ensemble is by invitation only, and is composed of both students and professional musicians. The Pit Orchestra meets after school from mid November-March.


Recycling & Environmental Club

Advisor: Deborah Lamer 


Members of the Environmental Club (formerly the Recycling Club) meet regularly during the school year to learn about Earth-friendly life practices and share this learning with the larger school community.  Through partnerships with local environmental groups such as Lambertville Goes Wild, The Hunterdon Garden Guild, and Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space, club members have participated in a variety of local service projects, hosted guest speakers, and created a concept plan for the renovation of the lower courtyard.  The club is open to all who are interested in responsible stewardship of our planet.


Robotics

Advisors: Craig Roth and Joe Vocke 


Robotics Club is open to all middle school or high school students interested in designing, programming, constructing and operating mobile robots. We meet weekdays after school. No experience required, just an interest in building robots!


Ski/Snowboard Club

Students of South Hunterdon will have the opportunity to ski and snowboard as a group and develop their skills in these exhilarating sports. Ski/Snowboard Club strives to provide a venue for wholesome outdoor activity for our youth during the winter season. The club visits Blue Mountain for five Saturday evenings throughout January and February.  Membership is open to both Middle and High School students regardless of their skill level, with pricing starting at $279 (including transportation).  Lessons and equipment rentals are also available for purchase.  Registration begins in October and will be limited to the first 40 participants.  Ski/Snowboard Club extends its offers to any SHR student by providing (for a separate cost) the opportunity to attend a weekend trip in March to Vermont; one of the country's finest states for extreme skiing and snowboarding.


South Spirit Club

Advisor: Kyle Hart 


The purpose of Eagle Spirit Club is to support those members of the student body who represent the school in varsity athletics, plays, band, and other club performances or competitions. The Spirit Club is responsible for all activities during Spirit Week. Any support needed such as decorating, attendance, or announcements will be provided. The Spirit Club will help and organize events that support the entire student body such as increased sponsorship , Night at the Nest,Improving game attendance and game themes. Any team or activity that needs support should contact the Eagle Spirit Club through its advisor. The Spirit Club is open to all high school students.



Spanish Honor Society

Advisor: Alison Douglas

Student Military Testing (HS)

Advisor: Kyle Hart 


Students interested in furthering their education or career in the military can begin the process by completing standard physical fitness assessments. Some of these assessments can be geared toward specific branches of the military or you can also complete a basic ROTC scholarship assessment. 


Tabletop Gaming Club (MS/HS)

Advisor: Maureen Smyth 


Club members gather to play non-electronic games including role-playing games, card games, strategy games, and board games. Our major focus is Dungeons & Dragons and Magic the Gathering, but play includes chess, Battleship, Hive, Skip-Bo, Werewolves of Millers Hollow, and more. Join us to play your favorites and to learn new games from the SHR Library's game collection. No experience necessary...just a desire to have fun and connect with friends.


The Great Outdoor Club/Spring Intramural Middle School

Advisor: Alison Douglas 


The “Great Outdoors” Intramural program will allow our middle schoolers the opportunity to experience a variety of physical activities and games that contribute to an active and healthy lifestyle without the competitiveness that comes with traditional spring team sports. Activities may include friendly competitions in various organized sports like kickball, frisbee, capture the flag, yoga, fitness circuits, dance lessons, walking, or jogging. Other activities may include outdoor lawn games such as croquet, bocci, and cornhole. The activities will be based on student choice to further engage our kids.

“The Great Outdoors” will meet twice per week from 3-4pm beginning in early April. It will run for 9 sessions.



Vocal Ensemble

Advisor: Jocelyn Alam 


Vocal Ensemble is an extracurricular group that meets after school on Tuesdays throughout the year. As a small group of singers, the ensemble prepares more modern and contemporary pieces that span different genres of music. Students will work on vocal technique at both an independent and group level to prepare for performances.


Weightroom Club

Advisors: Alison Douglas and Matt Giarretta 

 The weightroom club is open to all middle school and high school students who would like to learn more about fitness.  The club runs throughout the year Monday through Thursday and is supervised by an SHR staff member.  All students interested in participating must register using the athletic registration link found on the South Hunterdon High School webpage.


Yarn Club

Advisor: Kady Johnson

 The yarn club is a great opportunity for students who have an interest in knitting, crocheting, and other yarn crafts. Students are given the chance to explore their creativity and create cozy, beautiful pieces. The yarn club works individually or in groups which allows students to share ideas, or co-create with others.


Yearbook Club

Advisors: Toby Jefferis and Laura Lucchetto 


The Yearbook Club is designed to provide students with a collaborative approach to creating an authentic collection of memories to share with their classmates. Students will not only learn about elements of photography, graphic design, time lines, project management, critical decision making, and what is necessary to meet deadlines, but they will have the opportunity to truly take ownership of something that will be a memento for years to come.
