Mathematics Department

Three years of mathematics are required for graduation from South Hunterdon Regional High School. This requirement is usually met by taking mathematics in grades nine, ten and eleven. The Mathematics Department screens students for honors course placement annually. The program allows changing from honors or regular classes on a yearly basis. Under certain circumstances geometry and Algebra II may be taken at the same time, with administrative approval. Compensatory Education will be assigned for those students scoring below the Minimum Level Proficiency on the State mandated test.

Students are carefully selected for the 8th grade Algebra I course. The purpose of taking this course is to be able to take Calculus in 12th grade. It is to be noted that students taking Algebra I in the 9th grade still have the opportunity to take calculus by taking both geometry and Algebra II in 10th grade (with the approval of the math department chairperson).

It is highly recommended that an 8th grade student who receives a D+ or lower in Algebra I repeat Algebra I in 9th grade. Note that Algebra I in 8th grade does not count toward graduation.
